The 7 Melodic Minor Modes

What are melodic minor modes?

The melodic minor modes/scales are derivative of the descending form of the melodic minor scale (the melodic minor scale is played differently ascending than descending).

1) Jazz Minor Scale

2) Dorian b2 (Phrygian b6)

3) Lydian Augmented

4) Lydian Dominant (Overtone)

Also known as the Overtone Scale, this mode will often be played over a whole-tone/augmented harmony.

5) Mixolydian b6

6) Aeolian b5 (Locrian #2)

This mode is also referred to as Locrian #2.

7) Altered Scale (Superlocrian)

This mode is also known as “Superlocrian” because it is essentially the lydian of the locrian (for the key of C, that’s the Db lydian mode played starting on C).
